Dishwasher Won’t Continue the Cycle

by Spare Parts Pro on June 25, 2009

Your dishwasher, when correctly installed, can give you years of uninterrupted hassle free washing and cleaning. Then one day you go to switch on your trusty dishwasher and nothing happens.

What’s the first thing you going to do to fix this annoyance. Well I guess you might find the answer right here on the appliance repair help site but don’t reach for the phone book just yet because this might be something you can fix your self.

I’ll explain. Modern day dishwashers like those manufactured by Bosch and you can include Siemens and Neff in that have a built in safety feature protecting the dishwasher against flooding. The technical term is ‘Anti Flood Device’. There are other manufacturers who provide the same features but for now I’m only going to talk about the Bosch type machines.

In the base of the dishwasher in the plinth there is a float switch. This is your ‘Anti Flood Device’. In the event of your dishwasher over filling, the plinth fills with water, the float rises and actuates the switch. On a Bosch dishwasher this switch will do two things.

Firstly, it will send a signal to the programmer device to notify there is a fault and output a message in the form of a code to some sort of display.

Secondly, the pressure switch acts as the water level indicator for the sump of the dishwasher so when the water level rises the pressure switch will activate the drain pump.

So before you consider throwing good money at new dishwasher, try doing a bit of fault finding your self and you might save yourself a ton of money.

Just a quick update to this ‘Dishwasher will not continue the cycle’ article. There appears to be a common thread in the comments below. Most faults can be referred to the fact that the Anti Flood Overflow device has activated. I have included an image here to show what the anti flood may look like in a Hotpoint DWF40.

I had the same problem. Constant draining sound despite no water to drain. I have a NEFF. It was fixed by tipping the machine backwards and draining off the excess water from the base unit. Be prepared to wipe the water as the kitchen floor will be flooded!

Hi, I have a Hotpoint FDW80 and I am getting the error AL-10. Can you tell me what this is and how I can fix it. Currently the machine seems to be stuck in a drain cycle.

I have a Neff S5443X2UK/01 Dishwasher and this post helped me save about £300. removing the base plate with the 2 x T20 screws give access to the base tray where water collects from somewhere. Soaking up the water from the tray at the left hand side (where you will feel the float switch, allows the float switch to rise and enables the washer to function properly again. A bit cramped and small fingers help when pushing in cloths or a water magnet to remove the excess water. PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE ELECTRICITY IS TURNED OFF TO YOUR MACHINE WHILE COMPLETING THIS TASK.

AL-10 is the heating circuit. Check that the heater hasn’t gone open circuit. Alternatively, the connection spade for the heater supply on the main PCB. We discussed that somewhere else in a similar article.

Thanks Ali! Saved us a few hundred quid! :o )
(PS – I’d advise against washing paint rollers in the dishwasher!)

My Bosch machine stopped working at the weekend – constant draining sound after our drains became blocked and the water backed up to the machine flooding it. This article sounds like it might save me a lot of trouble and money.

many thanks, i’ll try this afterwork tonight.

Dishwasher was working fine, then for no reason would
not work at all. I drained the water out and when I
try to switch on now it blows the fuse in the plug with a
loud bang!

Spare Parts Pro June 30, 2009 at 10:08 am

@Beero
If you are blowing fuses then you have a fault going to earth. You have an insulation resistance problem possibly with the heater element. Check the heater has not gone open circuit using your multimeter. Set your meter to OHMS and with the wires disconnected from the heater place the terminal probes across the terminal ends.
No reading is open circuit.
Now place the terminal probe across one terminal and the earth or chassis. Set your meter to at least 2K. If you get a reading across here then the heater is shorting to earth.
Strictly speaking, this insulation resistance test can only be done with a Megger. Ask any sparky what that is if you don’t already know.

Spare Parts Pro June 30, 2009 at 10:15 am

@Delboy
If you find that your dishwasher sticks during the programme cycle or never completes then you may like to consider using the in built diagnosis programm that comes pre-configured with most modern day dishwashers.
If you have a electronic programaable timer then you can normally switch to test mode by first switch off the appliance. Now hold down the programme select button and at the same time press the power on button. Hold for 2 or 3 seconds and it should beep. You are now in test mode. Different models may vary.

Previous suggestions are valid but, I notice there is no mention of earth leakage circuit breakers operating? With Beko carry out a test of the mains lead and moulded on plug first! This is a problem I have found with these machines and will be found as a short circuit (0 or very low resistance) between live and neutral pins of the plug with the mains lead disconnected at the machine end of the mains lead. This obiviously make the fuse blow – usually as soon as the machine is plugged in, and before the heater comes on. A new 13amp good quality plug top could be fitted to the lead – or obtain a replacement lead from Beko. Always remember to test for safety, polarity and continuity of the electrical leads after any repair – get a sparky to do this if you haven’t the means. Failure to do so may put you and yours at risk of electric shock.

Help – I am having the exact same problem so we figured it was the anti-flood device tripped but we have a built in Neff and can’t find where to reset the device. We removed the kickboard below but there is nothing to remove to get to the wires and anywhere to soak up water. We don’t know how to remove the dishwasher from the fittings to pull it out and tip it up as discussed above. Can anyone help, I am really loathe to spend a huge callout fee when it is probably fairly simple to fix. Thanks.

Spare Parts Pro September 11, 2009 at 3:17 pm

You need to remove the appliance from under your work surface. Switch off the appliance and isolate from the electrical supply – pull the plug out!. Open the door and look for the screws that are scuring the appliance to the uderside of the work surface. Remove the screws and then adjust the feet downwards so as to give you enough clearance between the top of the dishwasher and the underside of the work surface. Now the dishwasher can easily be removed from its position.
With that done now tilt the dishwasher back until you see the water run out from the base plate.
Right the machine and test it before you slide it back under the work surface.

Podsmum September 12, 2009 at 11:44 am

Thank you so much for your reply. As a result we managed to get the machine out and tipped it right back but unfortunately no water came out :( We reset the machine and restarted it but it is still stuck on a drain cycle. We tried a couple of times just to be sure and still no luck. Looks like we will have to find the money to get someone out to repair it. Thank you again for your help.

colin marshallsea October 12, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Please can you inform if the Hoover Slimeline Dishwasher Model No hds 555m has the anti flood switch and where can it be located on the machine,if yes how do you reset it.

Spare Parts Pro October 13, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Colin.
Yes your HDS555 has the anti flood device. It sits on the base plate or plinth plate on the bottom of the dishawsher. Basically as the water rises, so does the little float which in turn actuates the microswitch. There is no reset to speak of. You need to drain the water out by tipping the appliance back.

we have a hotpoint fdw85 and all was fine up until 3 days ago when the AL05 error displayed, so cleaned all the filters switched off and then on again only to be greeted with the AL01 error (flood activation device) tilted machine back until a small amount of water ran away, mopped up and tried again, no joy, have taken of the pump and checked along with all the hoses pipes etc and still stuck with AL01, have layed machine on left handside and the polystyrene block that activates the flood switch is all dry and lowered no water anywhere have even taken of the salt container and washed through and hey presto still stuck with AL01, any ideas will be greatly recieved

Jomps November 3, 2009 at 4:27 pm

For Bosch S9F1B : THe machine was working fine then mid cycle there was a loud Pop not a bang and then it stopped. THere is water left in the bottom of the machine. Ive checked the fuse and it has NOT blown. If anyone has any ideas on what could be the problem or finding out what the problem is I would be very grateful . I dont want to spend a load of cash on it …only to find out from the call out that it is totally gone.

Many thanx.

Jomps/

Spare Parts Pro November 10, 2009 at 2:55 pm

@sharon.
Likely the module is stuck in the error mode. You may have to cancel the error to get the machine to restart.
Try pressing the start / pause button at the same time pressing the power on / off button. It may beep, then select the first programm in the cycle and power off.
Now power on and hit the start button.

Spare Parts Pro November 10, 2009 at 2:58 pm

@Jomps
You don’t say whether the appliance will power up or even allow you to select a program. The loud pop could be a capacitor bursting. Either motor start capacitor or mains surpressor.

Hi I have just found your site and I am trying some of the suggestions. I have a built in Technik dishwasher. It is washing but then not draining away. The machine makes a noise but doesn’t drain away. Once I have manaually removed the water it will then start again. Any suggestions. Thanks Jane

Have an Ariston AFA 250 dishwasher. Beeps at switch on then cycles through chosen programme – fill, heat and wash and then stops showing two flashing lights spray and wash. Hot water left in the bottom at this point. Anti flood float ok, air pressure switch cycles ok, soap dispenser opens ok. “Bit 100″ controller so no LED error code display. Where can one get error code listing?before changing control module, pumps etc..

Trevor December 7, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Hi
I have a Candy dishwasher about 10 years old. Yesterday it worked fine – today its dead. I checked obvious electrics – even replaced cable to terminals at the back – this powers other equipment, so no problem there. Removed front panel at top of door. No power is reaching the on off switch, (made sure I was activating door switch. Any ideas?
Many thanks

Spare Parts Pro December 15, 2009 at 10:24 am

With Bit 100 codes you have to read the LEDs – left to right.
1 + 2 – Timeout on draining
2 + 3 Timeout on filling

What numbers are the spray and wash lights.

Ben December 21, 2009 at 7:02 pm

I have a Neff dishwasher. I have replaced the drain pump and the control module. When i now turn the machine on fills with water. The control module then clicks and then there is a small hum for a few seconds. It then sounds as if the pump is trying to work and every few minutes this repeats. I open the door and there is water just sitting in the bottom. I can press the reset buttons to take it to the end cycle and empty the water. Why is it stopping mid cycle and not doing a full wash??

Spare Parts Pro December 22, 2009 at 3:20 pm

As we don’t know what the fault was before you changed those parts it is difficult to say what is going on. My guess is you are experiencing the same symptoms now as what you where before you changed the parts.
The hum is the pump doing it’s thing. It’s waiting for the signal to switch off via the pressure switch. There is a delay but it may be stuck in error mode. As we don’t know your model, try holding down the programme button at the same time as you turn on the power. That will either cancel test mode or initiate it.
Failing all that it could be the hum of the wash pump motor. Disconnect the connector block to the drain pump and try again. If it still hums it is the wash pump. Possibly the start capacitor.

I have a BOSCH dishwasher SGS4502EP/01, it’s about 6 years old, my problem is it will not fill or start any cycle, all you get is a grunting / groaning noise coming from the RHS bottom which after about 20 secs stops then nothing. Had the mains water inlet pipe off cleaned the filter applied power to the solenoid and manually filled the machine, so its not a water issue, some switch is blocking the supply, but as I’ve no manual or drawing I can’t trace the circuit, there are no fault indicators on this machine. Checked the anti flood device, if you raise the arm the sump pump activates. Have filled the machine manually but still does not cycle?

Nark Aldworth December 30, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Hi,
I have a Hotpoint FDW80 that has been giving me problems for several months. Only very rarely does it complete a full wash cycle – typically it stops and gives an AL10 error. When I spoke to Hotpoint they said it sounded like a blockage and sold me some sachets of Limescale and Detergent remover which I’ve tried – they seem to help for a couple of washes but thereafter the error reappears. I’ve seen the other comments in this thread about the AL10 error. Some seem to suggest it’s a problem with the heating circuit (although I’m not sure about this), others suggest it’s a problem with drainage and the anti-flood device. I’ve tried tipping the unit backwards to drain out any excess water but nothing emerges. Any suggestions greatfully received.

I have a Neff s5443×2uk integral dishwasher. When I switch on , select cycle and close door, the machine makes a noise as though it was ging to start – and then nothing. There is no water going in. All pipes are connected.

Can anybody help? we bought a 2nd hand dishwasher as our old one was tripping our electric and we presumed it was a problem in the panel and as it was a good few years old we decided to replace it, this “new one” has worked fine for a couple of months but last night it flooded the kitchen, I emptyed the water and gave it a good clean out but now this one is just tripping the electric when i switch it on, can someone tell me what to check/do before this one goes to dishwasher heaven and i get on ebay again?

bev January 9, 2010 at 5:46 pm

to add to my previous comment, we have turned the dishwasher on its back and drained the water that was in the bottom tray, allowed it to dry and now it will switch on without blowing the trop switch, it now fills, heats, but then doesnt go through the wash cycle, just waits a while and then empties itself? can someone give me some help as to what to look at or replace please? hate being without it!

I have a Siemens SE65A560, which has decided to stop on 1 minute remaining of any cycle. Any ideas?????

Alastair January 14, 2010 at 9:48 pm

I’ve got a Siemens SE64630GB – it’s built in. I was running a cleaning cycle and it seems to have cut out quite early on. When I opened it up, I noticed water in the base of the unit, the power lights in the door were out and won’t come back on.

I’ve cleaned the filters and tried to mop up the water inside.

Any suggestions on how I can get it powered on again?

We have a Bosch Exxcel Auto Option Dishwasher (DW) for over 7 years now and it has finally started to go wrong. I don’t know what model it is, but I will find out, if someone wants to know. Firstly, about a year ago, the DW tab would not come out and the dishes were not very clean, but this was fixed by removing the calcium from the spray arms and we have now used a DW descaler twice since, as we do live in an area that has hard water. Last week, we noticed that the dishes were not clean again and the cycle would take twice as long. We discovered that there is no hot water and on opening the completed cycle, it is stone cold and the dishes are also still wet and had not dried properly, leaving residue marks! I have read that the Bosch DW control circuit board has a major design defect with undersized relays on it and in order to fix it I need to replace the control circuit board as it will have been short circuited! Is this correct? How much would it cost to have it replaced, or should I just buy a new DW and avoid Bisch Bosch, or is it something else that might be simple to fix, he hopes and prays for :-) Any help or comments would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I HAVE a Neff dishwasher S54M45X5GB it has developed a fault that causes it to continually fill up then pump out then fill up then pump out over and over again. It also has the tap symbol constantly illuminated even after you cancel it – it just comes back on. These symptoms happen on all cycle options. Please help.

Some times if i press 2 program buttons when switching on it toggles ‘PO’ then ‘C3′ What does this mean

Spare Parts Pro February 7, 2010 at 1:04 pm

@Brian. The story behind the heater relays actually stems from a dry joint on the pcb where the heater cable connects to. When you have a dry joint you get arching thet then tracks back across the pcb tracks to the relays and then burns them out. I have actually done a repair to these boards a couple of times. The relays can be purchased from rapid electronics. You can email me directly with requests for spare parts. Look on the inside of your dishwasher soor for the model number.

Spare Parts Pro February 7, 2010 at 1:37 pm

#gixer800 This sounds like the water fill sensor or flow rate sensor is failing. You will find it in the regen box inline with the water inlet pipe. It is a small impeller that measures water flow. Try to remove it and clean the contacts. If that doesn’t work you may have to replace it.

Paul Sullivan February 10, 2010 at 1:29 pm

I’m having problems with my Hoover HDS555. I have already carried out the actions recommended by the extremely helpful Spare Parts Pro, (earlier in thread).
When a programme is selected and started, the machine starts to fill with water, but goes into emergency pumping-out mode after 30 seconds or so. I have drained the machine by tipping it (4 times, to date), but that does not solve the problem. I have also located the anti flood device on the base plate, and that looks fine. Might it be something else? Is there a pressure valve somewhere that I should be checking/unblocking/drying out?
Any help appreciated, before resorting to the besieged allet!

Bev March 5, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Hi there, I have left questions that have remained unanswered, even though other users have had their more recent questions delt with, have i missed something please? Was i supposed to subscribe? a bit of help would be lovely, thanks
Bev

Spare Parts Pro March 6, 2010 at 1:17 pm

@Bev If you are using powder detergent then you must return to using tablets and ensure that you place them in the dispenser. The reason being that the start of each wash cycle there is a prewash. If you are placing powder in the dishwasher then the prewash will dissolve the detergent and the water will faom up and create an artificial rise in water. The water will then flow into the drip tray and activate the anti flood device.

With that out of the way, lets assume you are using the dishwasher correctly.
If your mains is tripping when you use the dishwasher, we can’t just assume that the fault is with the dishwasher. The trip switch in your consumer unit is measuring earth leakage at something around 30mA.
The ring main in your kitchen maybe on the same ring main as the house. Lets say you have 30 appliances around the house all connected to the mains. That means that anything creater that 1mA earth leakage from each appliance will cause the trip to go.
Why not unplug all appliances from the mains and just have the dishwasher only connected to the mains and then try it again. If it no longer trips the mains then it means that you have more than one faulty appliance in your house but we will not discount the dishwasher at this stage.

At the moment we don’t know what make and model you have but I would guess that it has a programmer device with push buttons. Power off and hold down the start button and programme selector button simultaneously, press the power button and hold the two buttons until the appliance beeps. When it does, release the buttons and the machine is now in test mode. With each press of the power button will test that part of the programme and will stop at the point that it fails.
The programme will either display an error code or will beep a number of times to signify the fault.

Of course you could submit a Support Request and get other help and advice.
