Dishwasher wont continue the cycle

Posted on 10 November 2007 by Tony

Your dishwasher, when correctly installed, can give you years of uninterrupted hassle free washing and cleaning. Then one day you go to switch on your trusty dishwasher and nothing happens.

What’s the first thing you going to do to fix this annoyance. Well I guess you might find the answer right here on the appliance repair help site but don’t reach for the phone book just yet because this might be something you can fix your self.

I’ll explain. Modern day dishwashers like those manufactured by Bosch and you can include Siemens and Neff in that have a built in safety feature protecting the dishwasher against flooding. The technical term is ‘Anti Flood Device’. There are other manufacturers who provide the same features but for now I’m only going to talk about the Bosch type machines.

In the base of the dishwasher in the plinth there is a float switch. This is your ‘Anti Flood Device’. In the event of your dishwasher over filling, the plinth fills with water, the float rises and actuates the switch. On a Bosch dishwasher this switch will do two things.

Firstly, it will send a signal to the programmer device to notify there is a fault and output a message in the form of a code to some sort of display.

Secondly, the pressure switch acts as the water level indicator for the sump of the dishwasher so when the water level rises the pressure switch will activate the drain pump.

So before you consider throwing good money at new dishwasher, try doing a bit of fault finding your self and you might save yourself a ton of money.

Just a quick update to this ‘Dishwasher will not continue the cycle’ article. There appears to be a common thread in the comments below. Most faults can be referred to the fact that the Anti Flood Overflow device has activated. I have included an image here to show what the anti flood may look like in a Hotpoint DWF40.

Anti Flood Device

You can see it here as items 17 18 and 19 collectively.

Let’s assume your dishwasher has over filled at some stage and with time the water in the drip tray has now evaporated, the float item 19 can have a tendency to stick and make the switch item 18 stay in an actuated state. This can give a false positive. Try to reset the float switch or check even that there is no water in this drip tray. When the float is activated it can cause the drain pump to be permanantly in a drain mode

Modern Dishwashers have program boards with built in led lights that tell the user what part of the cycle the dishwasher is in. These lights also double as fault indicators and work in a binary notation. So when the light is on or flashing that is a one (1), off is a zero (0). This transpose into fault codes where an example can be found here http://www.keepingupappliances.com/repair-help/washing-machine-error-codes.

OK that is for a washing machine but the theory behind it is the same.
Most faults on a dishwasher are simpler than you think so try not to complicate it. Use the example in error code article I told you about and when I get back to my office, I’ll check out the code sequences for you.

    Until later, regards Tony

  6. admin Says:

Let’s update the Error Codes for the Hotpoint Dishwasher.
These codes refer to DWF50 and FDW60 series
You should have 6 leds on the control panel.
    Led 1 Intensive
    Led 2 Normal
    Led 3 Eco
    Led 4 Fast
    Led 4 Prewash
    Led 6 Delicate

    Error Codes are Light On
    3 Overflow
    4 Solenoid Valve
    5 Thermister Circuit
    6 Timeout Heating.

Let’s hope this is starting to make sense. Remind me to write a new article about this.

We have a Whirlpool dishwasher ADP 5550 - it had almost completed its cycle when the indicator went back to the rinse diagram (the first one) and the power button started flashing. It won’t continue with anything now. What can we do?

  8. admin Says:

    Joe, Sue
Both your ADP machines show similar symptoms.
If there is a fault on the appliance then it will be indicated by a rapidly flashing ‘Start’ LED and a beeping at one second intervals.
If only the start LED is flashing this is an indication that an NTC or thermistor failure has occurred. If you have and LCD readout then and ‘F’ number will be displayed, in this case ‘F1′.
We need to delete this fault code by pushing the start button and holding it for 1 or 2 seconds.
Now select program 1 and turn off the mains switch. While pressing and holding the start button turn on the mains power and release the button when the led flashes.
We are now in test mode. Select program one and start the active test by pressing the start button. It will fail when one of the leds light up. One flash or an ‘F1′ is the heat sensor. Two flashes or ‘F2′ is the over fill or anti flood. We spoke about this in an earlier post.
    Try this and revert.

I’ve updated this article with a schematic showing where you will find the said anti flood device. Try tilting the dishwasher back and see if water drains out of the back of the drip tray. If so this will solve your problem.

    Tony,
Iam having trouble with my adp5540,it is not running through its programs automatically, but each program works if i select them manually,i have put it in test mode as above but none of the indicator `leds`are flashing,it seems to be in prewash mode from the sound of it,the only lights on are the prewash led ( steady) and the start button which is flashing constantly.
    Any ideas

  12. Tony Says:

    Barry,
When you initially start the machine, can you hear the drain pump come on and does it stay on. If so, disconnect the machine and take the plinthe plate off and remove the two black inspection covers. Can you see water in the bottom. Are there signs of water in the drip tray. Its either overflow or the Heater protection failure.

  13. barry Says:

    Tony,
Thanks for the reply, when you say the plinth,do you mean the plastic strip below the door? I removed that but could see no inspection covers?
The drain pump comes on when the program starts to run but it switches off after a short time. How would i go about fixing the heater protection?

    Cheers

    Hi

I have a hotpoint slimline model SDW60 it wont complete a full cycle. It is washing in cold water but when it is ment to rinse it stops and the LCD light above the 50 delicates flashes,I have read your comment above regarding another hotpoint and you say about the plinth coming off and the flood float but I cant seem to get my plinth off, would the float in my model be somewhere else?

  15. mandie Says:

    Hi
I have been on the phone to hotpoint and they have told my flashing light means time out heating they told me how to re-set the machine but but when I tried the program again it stopped at the same point, but the water was warmer,I dont really want to call hotpoint out just to re-set heating so do you know how I could do it myself?

  16. Tony Says:

    Mandie

Sorry I didn’t reply soonest but on this model you may have a problem with the programmer PCB. Timeout on heater fault can sometimes mean the heater isn’t coming on or is intermittent. There is a common fault on this PCB with a dry joint on the heater terminal. You can try re-soldering the joint or ask someone who is a sparky to do it.

Help! My Neff dishwasher that is just over 2 years old started the constant draining noise too. I did as has been advised above, pulled it out tipped it back and yes water came out. It worked again, great I thought! But after a week I have the same problem again this morning.

If water is getting into the bottom tray how do I stop it? The machine is so concealed at the bottom there is nothing that can be taken off at the bottom, nothing anywhere it seems.

I would be really pleased of any advise.

  18. Bob_T Says:

I have a Hotpoint 6832B dishwasher which I understand was made by Bosch. It has the anti-flood device but that is not my problem. Machine now takes twice as long to cycle as it fills very slowly. The heater is showing signs of powdery furr but the salt light is off. Previously the water fill was audible but now it is quiet. I have removed the Water Safety Valve and rigged up a water and electric supply to find that water does not flow quickly, a bit like a gently pouring teapot. Connecting a tube to the other outlet I can puff into tube to make water stop so that bit works. Does it seem likely there is a blockage? How fast should the water flow? I would have thought quicker.
    Any advice please.
    Besr regards, Bob.

  19. Tony Says:

    Bob,

There is a build up of lime or calcium either in the pipe work or the inlet solenoid valve. First thing I would do is disconnect the feed pipe from the solenoid valve and direct the pipe into a bucket. Do you get water flow at full bore. Check the inline filter in the end of the pipe.
Your little demo proves that the plunger in the solenoid valve is all furred up, so if you know you have a good flow of water to it then I would change this valve.
The part number for the valve is 180770 at around 26.00 GBP.

    regards Tony

  20. Tony Says:

    Clare

You might need to check that the machine is level or at least it has a slight incline to the front. Say just 3 - 4 deg. This will prevent the over fill from spilling into the drip tray. If your over fill is a stand pipe in the sump of the dishwasher - its a little pipey thing sticking up in the middle of the sump - then it may be that you are over soaping or the water is froathing up to much. This gives an artificial water level and hence the over fill.
This is normally associated with chucking your tablet into the bottom of the dishwasher before you start it.

hi,i have an indesit IDL500 and when i start a cycle the pump starts then stops, water goes into the machine then the pump empties it and lights 1 & 3 flash, can you advise

  22. Bob_T Says:

    Hi Tony,
Thank you for your reply. The valve was clean so I eventually got the seperate parts dismantled and decided that the small “bellows” in the valve was torn. The other “bellows” once the solenoid valve was removed appeared ok but was weak and not sure if that was torn or not before handling. A new one worked fine. Thanks again. Bob_T

In your reply to Clare you suggest that she have a slight forward bias whereas I would have thought that a slight backward bias would be better. I suppose it depends upon where the float is. On my Hotpoint it is about in the middle on the LHS and there is no seal at the bottom of the door. Running empty I was getting a few drips from the door corners.

  23. Tony Says:

    Thanks for the update Bob.

Yes, what I meant to say was that you need to have it slightly higher at the front than the rear. This is not advised by the manufacturer because if you get it wrong it can cause all sorts of problems.
The excess water can also derive from condensate running down the inside of the door so hence the drops running from the corners.

    regard Tony

  24. Tony Says:

    Brian

Lights 1 and 3 flashing indicates a faulty Heater. Normally just the Thermistor has failed or has come loose.
Use your multimeter to check the heater is not open circuit.
The NTC - thermistor - you will need to check for continuity by setting your ohms reading to at least 20k. The reading will change over temperature.
The device is fitted to the door and wired directly onto the PCB module. Again prone to dry joints as I mentioned in a previous post.

    Help
I have an AEG favorit 40660i
Although it goes through its cycle the water is cold and it does not dry the pots.
I suspect the heating element has gone.
Or could it be something else?
    Your help would be appreciated.
    Rob

  26. Tony Says:

    Rob

Your model 40660i should be equipped with error codes that you see displayed on the control facia readout. These will be a combination of three lit or flashing LEDs. The heater is led 3 on only, the NTC thermal device will be led 1 and led 3 lit together.

    regards Tony

  27. Rob Says:

    Thanks Tony
The problem was the pcb in the control panel.
The switching relay for the elements was the problem.
Altough I have bought the replacement panel at a cost of £100 you can send your existing panel away for repair.

I purchased my replacement part from DomesticSpares Ltd who are in Scunthorpe.
They are a really helpfull company who you can seek technical advise from over the phone 01724 876600

They also gave me the company to repair my part who are QER Ltd http://www.qer.biz

  28. Tony Says:

    Rob

Glad to see you got it sorted. There seems to be a common problem with modern machines whereby the heater terminal on the PCB has a dry joint which causes the copper tracking to over heat and then burn out the contacts on the heater relay. I have done these repairs my self before now but they can be time consuming. You can buy the relay from Rapid Electronics if anyone else is interested.
Incidentally, we KUA or me really do provide spares for appliances via our online shop at www.keepingupappliances.com
I’ve also used QER before today, good tip Rob.

    Hi

I have a Hotpoint BF80, 2 years old, which has already had a heater element replaced due to a short. 2 months later the machine now has lights 5 & 7 flashing and pumps out for 2 minutes then trips out. The pump is not blocked as it pumps out all the water I put into the bottom. Occasionally the wash cycle will start but again, just trips out.

I can seemingly clear the lights but the program light does not come on until I press the P button to choose a program. However, 2 minutes later the two light come on. I guess the PCB could be faulty but is there anyway I can try clearing the flashing lights in case it is simply a temporary malfunction, please??

    Many thanks

    Hi tony
i have an indesit DI620 dishwasher, when i start in any program the pump starts for a min or so then water is letin, cycle starts and after about 2 mins pump comes on, machine stops with led’s 2 and 4 flashing, the element looks a little burnt in one spot, could this be a module problem or element gone ?

    thanks phil

  38. Tony Says:

@Phil Error led 2 and 4 is most certain to be the heater element. Check for open circuit with your multimeter - ohms setting.

@Ann Your Fault code A03 is a blocked drain pump or filter. Is the drain hose kinked so now the water can’t flow away to the drain.

@Bill Again on your model 4 + 6 is the heater circuit. Check the Thermostat and or the heater if they have gone open circuit.

Remember that the fault could be on the PCB for most of the problems people experience. There is a Dry Joint in the heater circuit on the modern day ELectronic control boards. If this is something you would rather not tackle then take the board to your local Engineering college. Any student would fix this for the price of a pint.

  39. Mark Says:

Hi there - nice site and very useful so far to know I’m not alone with this problem of the dishwasher running constantly. Mine went partway through a cycle and now the pump runs constantly even when the door is open - and ALL the LEDs are on (all lights / all segments of the “number” LEDs). Will try the pump / water float switch first - perhaps going partway through a cycle could indicate drainage probs too so will check the hoses. If it’s not this I also suspect a dry joint or other issue with the controller board. Machine is a Siemens 65530GB/07. Is there an obvious (ha!) way of getting at the controller, which is built into the door? I didn’t install the machine and have never had to repair it. I can remove screws randomly but don’t want to undo the one that holds the whole thing together otherwise my kitchen will look like an exploded parts diagram!

  40. Linus Says:

    Hi, I have a Whirlpool DWF 407.
It stops for no apparent reason towards the middle or end of the cycle. It beeps twice and stops, then after a few seconds it beeps (like it would if you open and close it in the middle of a cycle) and tries to start again.
It sounds as if it’s trying to do something but then changes it’s mind, it only runs for a second or so, then it beeps and stops again, pause for a few seconds and beeps again while trying to start, and so on forever until you open the hatch.
If I close it again it continues that behaviour, unless I change program to the short cold water one - but all the other programs produces the same result.
When I open it there’s hot water in there. There’s no blinking leds (no error message). The only cycle it finishes is the cold water rinse (button 1 from the left). And since that one works, it seems to me that the pump’s working fine. Any ideas?

With regards to those with the Whirlpool dishwasher there is a sequence you can run through to get to diagnostics mode.
This may or may not work on all machines.
    1. Make sure the machine is empty first.
    2. Select the first program, normally rinse.
    3. Switch off.
    4. Press and hold the start button and them press power on.
    5. Light will begin to flash, release button.
    6. Machine will now go through each program cycle by filling, washing, heating and draining.
    7. At each stage, Errors will be shown by the start button light flashing code.

I would really love to help each and every one of you out with your problems but if the community could butt in her with their own remedies that would be a really helpful.

I have an obscure Chinese made dishwasher (King d’Home LV120E.12) that will not go past the pre-rinse cycle and I suspect an intermittent fault as it will occasionally go through the entire programme without faltering. Great website - thank you. My concealed NEFF dishwasher FD8206 had the anti-flooding device triggered by water backed-up through the outflow due to a blocked drain. Drain now clear but water in base. How do I open the base? There is a black screw-head on the base panel but nothing seems to happen if I turn it. Do I need to get the whole thing out? That is a huge job! HELP PLEASE!!!

  51. Tony Says:

Bosch dishwashers will almost always fail safe. Irrespective of what is wrong, it will always attempt to drain the water away.
I did a repair only recently on a Bosch dishwasher that would start to fill at the start of the programme and then instantly drain down again.
What I found was, where the water leaves the regen box and enters the sump, there is connecting hose that was clogged with gunge.
As the machine was filling it couldn’t discharge the water quick enough and was causing the float switch to activate the drain pump.
Sometimes the fault can be the most simplest of things and mostly they are.
Don’t try to over complicate your thought pattern when you are diagnosing faulty dishwashers, it really isn’t that complicated.
    The only problems I have with a dishwasher is emptying and filling it, just ask my misses ;-}

  52. Tony Says:

    @Al
The black screw head is for adjusting the rear feet so is best you don’t touch that otherwise the dishwasher won’t be level.
Just till the dishwasher back to allow the water to run out. The down side is your kitchen floor gets flooded so plenty of towels.

  53. Tony Says:

    @Gillian
The thermistor is part of the PCB module on this dishwasher so you need to change the whole module. Take the control facia and outer door skin off and the parts will become self evident. Part ref MERC00143208 approx £50.00

  54. Tony Says:

    @Richard
Sounds like you have a Kenwood derivative. Common fault on these are the dry joint on the pcb heater connection. May even be the heater relay. Take the module off and look at the heater connections, if they look dull unlike the others then that is your problem.
